What I'm eating

  • Friday lunch: rye bread sandwich with inches of baby spinach, mushrooms, cheese, artichoke hearts
  • Thursday afternoon: eating an apple and some seed filled crackers
  • Thursday lunch: the final leftover soy bombs, with a big pile of rocket leaves & some tahini dressing.
  • Tues lunch with my parents. Pide bread sandwich with avocado, pesto, greens & fetta. Positively delicious. And a coffee.
  • Tuesday breakfast: kamut toast (from Sonoma) with tahini and mum's home-made plum jam

Quicklinks

  • Broad beans: Look at this salad on Stonesoup. What a wondrous mix of flavours and textures. While broad beans might be a bit fiddly they’re absolutely worth the effort. Plus they’re , here in Australia.
  • Quick couscous soup: I love the quick-ness of this recipe from 101 Cookbooks. It’s a couscous soup with broccoli, sundried tomatoes and goats’ cheese.
  • Grocery prices: In the Guardian Alex Renton investigates who wins when there’s a rise in grocery prices. It’s a murky, complex trail.
  • Weight loss: Working on the idea that by making small changes to your eating habits you can lose weight, Blogher has a guide to shaving 400 calories per day.
  • Foods to eat during Autumn: While we’re heading into summer, in the northern hemisphere it’s autumn. Sophie from Mostly Eating has put together an autumn eating guide. What’s in season, a printout fridge guide and some simple food suggestions – a great resource.
  • Ratatouille: If you’re wondering how to eat more vegetables, why not start with this ratatouille bake with feta cheese. It’s from Cook Sister and looks amazing.

Oh – look at those broad beans… How you make me yearn for summer now! :)

I do love the photo of golden egg yolks on the Guardian’s page.

Just did a quick shop at Prahran market. I cannot believe it. The organic produce, usually so much more expensive than conventional, was cheaper in many instances today. I wonder what’s going on there? (Sorry, that’s a strange little aside, I do realise)

Jules’ love of broad beans is Very Infectious, isn’t it?

kathryn 01 November, 2008

Jules’ photographs, recipes and commitment to the broad bean is highly infectious. Despite their fiddly-ness and the multi-step process required to eat them.

Jeanne – I’ve been so much looking forward to spring and summer this year. However I read a lot of northern hemisphere blogs and have found myself almost wishing for autumn foods. How contrary!

Sophie 01 November, 2008

Thanks for the link Kathryn – I felt very guilty posting such a northern hemispheric post!

I must admit Autumn is my favourite season for food! Hot weather is lovely but a bit of winter is nice too.

Hi Kathryn.

I was going to write a specific comment about this post, but rather than single out just this one, I’m going to say:

Thank you for all the clear information, sound advice and delicious, healthy eating tips you share. I’m fairly new to your blog — I subscribed to your RSS feed a few weeks ago. Incidentally, I subscribed after reading just one post. I knew I had found a good thing.

What I really need to do, though, is devise a strategy to read your “back catalogue” of posts. Yes, I do want to read them all. Now. Tonight. I think I’ll start with “What’s in season” in your part of the world. (I’m a northern hemisphere inhabitant.)
