Five things you didn't know about me(me)
Posted by kathryn in Blogging
Kate from Veggie Friendly has tagged me for the meme – five things you didn’t know about me – so here goes. h3. The last time I ate meat, it was . . . Reindeer, yup, I ate Rudolph. I gave up meat in 1992, haven’t eaten fish for the last ten years, but back in 1996 I was travelling around Europe. I spent some time in Norway, visiting the fjords and gazing on the spectacular landscape. My travelling companion …
Spring changes at Limes & Lycopene
Posted by kathryn in Blogging
Limes & Lycopene has been well over-due for a spring clean. Launched with the current look and feel, and software about three years ago, it’s been slightly neglected since then – no upgrades or proper site work. However, over the last couple of weeks Richard and I have been making some changes. Much of the work has been below the surface. Stuff to make Richard’s maintenance of and my posting on the site easier. However, as you’ll see if you’re …

Back from holidays
Posted by kathryn in Blogging
I’m back from holidays. Had a wonderful, wonderful time visiting outback NSW. Saw many sunsets; camped in the bush; shepherded sheep, feral goats and emus of the road; saw more kangaroos than I thought possible and most definitely cleared my head of the city hustle and bustle. Despite the current Sydney downpour, our trip has made me realise exactly how dry this land is. Thanks to all of you who sent emails, visited and commented while I was away. At …
Night noodle market
Posted by kathryn in Blogging
Most nights I enjoy cooking a meal, I find it relaxing, engrossing and it gives me a sense of wellbeing, through nourishing and nurturing Richard and myself with good food. I’m also in the fortunate (?) position of having a partner who can (and is happy to) cook as well. We don’t eat out a lot, probably about once a week and we get take-away about once a fortnight. As well as enjoying cooking, eating at home gives me …
Menu for hope III: the final total
Posted by kathryn in Blogging
The first thing I have to do post-Christmas, is let you know about the Menu For Hope campaign, which has finished for this year. In 2005 US$17,000 was raised for UNICEF and while we were all hoping for more this year, little did we expect a final total of US$58,041.70 would be donated to the UN’s World Food Programme. Prize winners will be up on Chez Pim’s site on January 15th and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I …

The US$7 Dinner Challenge
Posted by kathryn in Blogging, Desserts, Salads and Dinners
Bananas, custard and asparagus are not the most obvious elements on which to base a meal. And when I started thinking about Sarah Cucina Bella’s $7 dinner challenge they were far from my mind. Originally I was planning a red lentil dal with yoghurt and rice. Good bargain fodder. Until I saw asparagus for a dollar and realised bananas were the cheapest fruit in the supermarket. Which is when my plan changed. Instead my meal is a barley, fetta …
Meeting other Sydney bloggers

On the second to last night of the GFM Night Noodle Markets I met up with a group of other Sydney bloggers: Grab Your Fork, Morsels&Musings, Cucina Rebecca, Initiales JB, PiCkLes PeRks, Jenius and Sweet Little Treat. It was lovely to put names to faces . . . or should I say blog names to fully-rounded, real-live human beings. It was also fun being with a group of people who don’t think twice about photographing their food and are probably …

Getting faster
Posted by kathryn in Blogging
Over the weekend Richard and I did a little bit of housekeeping. You may notice my sidebar is now appearing on every page, rather than just the main blog page. This should make Limes & Lycopene a bit easier to navigate. Richard also updated the machine this blog is running on and we’re now using lighttpd instead of apache. To be honest, I don’t know what that means, except that Limes & Lycopene is running a bit faster – which …

Veggie Friendly Veggie Friendly posts restaurant reviews, focusing on how sympathetic their menu is to vegetarians – hence the name. As Kate says: bq. The idea behind my restaurant reviews is to rate different eateries for vegetarian friendliness. I hope this helps you choose a great veggie friendly restaurant – for yourself or for vegetarian friends or family. My master plan is to raise more …
What would you like me to blog about?
Posted by kathryn in Blogging
I’ve been struggling with my blogging mojo for the last two weeks. I’ve thought about posts. I’ve half written posts. I’ve sat at the computer trying to force the words out. I’ve cleaned the house and done my accounts to avoid writing posts. And apart from one recipe nothing decent has come out of me. I’ve tried. I have at least three half-written posts and several post ideas, but nothing is quite finished. Nothing is quite ripe and ready …

Update
Posted by kathryn in Blogging
I’ve been taking a mini break from blogging this week. A few reasons – other deadlines, the need to put some energy and focus into clinic, as well as a desire for time away from the computer. I should be back next week, with some new content. In the meantime I wanted to point out this excellent, excellent post answering the question “Should I eat breakfast if I’m not hungry?”, which I came across via Sophie’s handpicked links. Remember to …
An interview at Stonesoup
Posted by kathryn in Blogging
I’m on holidays at the moment, down the coast in gorgeous Jervis Bay. Which means I nearly missed the posting on Stonesoup of an interview I did with Jules. You can find it here. We chat about getting enough vegetables, organic food, being a vegetarian and my recent encounters with urban chicken-keeping.
Happy new year & how are those new year resolutions going?
Posted by kathryn in Blogging
h3. Happy new year. Do you make new year resolutions? If any of yours centre around healthy eating, then I’d strongly advise reading Sophie’s simple plan to make healthy eating easier this year. It’s an easy and yet powerful principle to follow, which will lead to you eating better food this year. In the spirit of Sophie’s post I thought I’d put up a photo of the fruit and vegetables I ate on one day last week. In other …
Talking about gluten free & the GI
Posted by kathryn in Blogging
A couple of weeks ago I met up with the lovely Arwen from Hoglet K and The Chameleon’s Tongue to talk about whether gluten free food was health food. We discussed the GI, the latest “trend” for gluten free and how to make eating gluten free that bit healthier. Anyway, Arwen recorded the interview and you can listen to it at the site, or download as a podcast. She has also posted a great little summary of our conversation. If …

This set my mind working and I’ve come up with a few more ideas on my ’Everyday …
Citrus and The Everyday Kitchen
Posted by kathryn in Blogging and Fruit
Today I have a question and also some news. h3. Citrus I’ve just moved into a suburb, where almost every house has a citrus tree. In my garden there is a glorious, large lime tree. When we moved in it was laden with fruit and I’ve been frantically preserving, marmalading, making pickle, squeezing into salad dressings and giving away to friends. Over the last two weeks it’s come alive with new flowers and these blossoms, as I have discovered, …

And each article I read seems to feature a different food. h3. Does anyone know where to buy farro in Sydney? I’m obsessed with Helen’s Best Salad Ever. The recipe looks glorious. I want to try it. But am having no luck buying farro. Do we call it something else …

On over-using the word "easy"
Posted by kathryn in Blogging
I’ve noticed recently how often I use the word “easy” about cooking in general, but more particularly, about my own recipes. I find myself constantly describing them as easy and to be honest, my use of this word is starting to feel quite shrill. I’ve noted before the pressure recipe writers feel to emphasise speed. I’ve felt this push in the past, but have always been uncomfortable with putting a time estimate on my recipes. I’ve seen how some …

Q & A Thursday is kind of over
Posted by kathryn in Blogging
There’s one outstanding question from today’s Q & A Thursday, which I’m just waiting on clarification. Emma’s asked if vegetables lose nutrients when cooked in a crockpot? It’s a good question and while I’ve done some scouting around, I just want to check my facts before posting the answer. So, sorry Emma, but I’m going to hold your question over until tomorrow. Otherwise, that’s the end of Q & A Thursday for this week.THANKS TO EVERYONE for you fabulous questions. …

For the last three years I’ve been training with DT Fitness. Three times a week I go to fitness in the park sessions with Donald and Alistair. I have never been a sporty person, indeed for most of my life exercise was something I did because it was good for me and definitely not because I wanted to. I’d do the bare minimum to be healthy and sometimes even that was a struggle. Then three years ago I decided enough …
